Anyone know the steps Phillip Zimbardo used in conducting the standford prison experiment?
Now let me remember..I wrote them in my book under my own little sub headings so I'll just copy it here.
Volunteer Sampling - He advertised for participants in the papers, asking for them to be white, males who would be paid $15 a day. The 24 most stable (physically and mentally) were chosen and randomly selected to be either a prisoner or guard.
There were 2 reserves and 1 dropped out, finally leaving 10 prisoners and 11 guards.
Setting - A mock prison was set up in the basement of the Psychology department at Stanford University in California USA. They allowed the 'officers' to help with the appearance and layout of the prison as well as selecting their own uniforms.
The 'prisoners' were unexpectedly 'arrested' at home.
On entry to 'prison' they were given a prison uniform with ID number, nylon stocking caps (to make their hair look short) and an ankle chain. They were in prison 24 hours whereas the guards worked shifts.
Rules and Regulations - The guards referred to the prisoners only by number. The prisoners were allowed certain 'rights': three meals a day, three supervised toilet trips, two hours for reading or letter writing, and two visiting periods and movies per week.They had to line up three times a day to be counted and tested on the prison rules.
Atmosphere - The guards had uniforms, clubs, whistles, handcuffs and reflective sunglasses (to prevent eye contact). The aim was to ensure that their sense of individuality would be more likely to act within their role rather than following their personal morals.
Findings - Over the first few days the guards grew increasing tyannical. Thewoke prisoners in the night and got them to clean the toilet with their bare hands. Someguards were so enthusiastic in their role tht they even volunteered to do hours without pay.
The participants appeared at times to forget that they were only acting. Even when they were unaware of being watched, they still played their roles. When one prisoner had had enough, he asked forparole rather than saying he wanted to stop being part of the experiment. Had he come to think that he was actually a prisoner?
Five prisoners had to be released early because of their extreme reactions (crying, rage and acute anxiety) - symptoms that had started to appear within two days of the beginning of the study. In fact the whole xperiment was ended after six days despite the intention to continue for two weeks.
