Will a 30 amp power cord work with a 40amp outlet?
My dryer has a 30amp 3 prong power cord. The outlet is also 3 prong but they are shaped different. The only power cord that I can find to match the outlet is 40amp. Can I put the new power cord without killing myself or the dryer.
You should be able to use it safely. A 40 amp outlet means that it has the capacity to deliver 40 amps, just as all of the outlets in your house have the capacity to deliver more current than you normally use.
Your house wiring has lots of plugs in it, and the capacity of the wiring leading to those outlets is almost always higher than the leads to your lamps, computers, stereos and so forth.
That is, your normal outlet will handle 20 or 30 amps, but then you plug light lamp wires into it and do not worry about that. That is quite normal.
However if this circuit is only used for the dryer, then you could be ultra-safe and change the circuit breaker. But that is not something you would need to do, or would normally do.
