Projection screen information please.?
We are showing a movie outside on the side of our school. Our school media team said that there aren't projectors strong enough in our school except one, but it's not portable. I'm looking for information that I need to know so I'm not an idiot when we got to rent one. Thank you! (:
This question is hard to answer without the specifics of the setup, so I am going to make a few assumptions. I am assuming that this will take place at night... during the day just isn't realistic. I am also assuming that the area is dark within reason (ie: not right next a busy street or right under a parking lot light). First, is your movie going to be widescreen (16:9) or standard (4:3)? It is better to get a projector natively in the right format. A 4:3 projector can show 16:9 and vice versa, but it will be visibly letterboxed. Your second choice is going to be the resolution you want. Generally, standard def for projectors is XGA 1024x768 (or WXGA for widescreen). You can get HD projectors for large venues, but they are going to cost a lot more and if it's not going to be on a real screen, it may not be worth it. Your next consideration is how big you want the image. Smaller projectors tend to top out at 300" diagonal (that's 16' x 12' widescreen or 19' x 15' standard), but larger projectors can go up to 600". Keep in mind the throw distance. A 300" image may require the projector to be 20' or more away. Basically, the bigger you want to go, the more powerful projector you will need and the farther away it will sit. Brightness is measured in lumens. For 300" or less, you could maybe get away with 3000 lumens, but it would look better at 4000-6000. If you want to go for super size, you want a large venue projector that can do 8000-10,000 or more. (keep in mind that large venue projectors can be 30lbs or more) The more uncontrolled extraneous light, the brighter you want to go. Another consideration is contrast ratio. The bigger this number is, the less washed out the image will seem. A ratio of 2000:1 is the minimum I would do. I would advise trying one of the school's small projectors ahead of time. It can help give you an idea of how big you want to go and how much brighter you want to be. And don't forget you need a sound system!
