Play Electric

By admin

What is the best way to learn to play electric guitar without a teacher?

I want to start learning to play electric guitar as I have listened to black/death/thrash metal for a year or so and never thought about it. I want to know any good companies who offer an online lesson service and or books or videos. If anyone has had an experience with a method of learning to play I would love to hear.
Thanks
Jake

P.S - I am willing to pay for things like books and video's etc. Not just looking for free ways.

Well OK good for you, Its a great idea to learn to play guitar as you can have a useful skill that everyone can enjoy plus it can help you get a job etc. Anyway to your question.
There are a few guitar lessons that I can recommend. First off is Metal method and all of its related videos. It is a series of varying video's that teach you different things, its really useful but you do have to pay for the DVD's. Here is the link:

http://metalmethod.com/store_front.htm

The other site I can recommend is:

http://www.aaronsguitarlessons.com/.

This site has some fantastic lessons and nearly everything is free. Also I would obviously suggest youtube as you can learn pretty much anything from youtube. Also what you need to think about is the guitar/ amp and other equipment that you will be getting. There are a load of different guitars out there and you need to think about whether you will be playing the guitar loads or just every so often as this will obviously affect what equipment you should buy.
I have to recommend an ibanez guitar to start off with as they are great for any form of metal and they are well made and are very fast to play.
Here are some recommendations for guitars:
Ibanez GRG170DX
Ibanez GRG250DX
Ibanez SZR520- Better for heavier rythm
Peavey HP special EX
Peavey Rotor EX tremolo

Suggestions for amps:
VOX ad15VTXL- the amp i use
Marshall 30 watt- most marshalls are great so any 30 watt is more than enough
Line 6 spider IV- Great amp
Orange Micro crush- gret for beginners

Other equipent:
You will need a distortion pedal of some kind if you want to get really heavy. I would suggest either a boss MT-2 Metal zone pedal or a boss MD-2 mega distortion pedal as they are both amazing distortion pedals. Also if would probably be a good idea to get a wah pedal as they are amazing for adding extra effects for solo's etc. I can only suggest a dunlop JCB-95 wah pedal for this.
Send me a message telling me what bands you are into and I can help you out even more. Also I have a youtube account which I can put some instructional vids on to help you out
