Home theater question: Connecting HDMI's to TV's and receivers?
I am building a new house, and need to get it wired for home theater before drywall goes up. I have an Xbox 360, blu-ray player and an HDMI cable box, and also I am planning to buy a very good receiver such as the Pioneer elite series.
My question is this: The xbox, blu-ray and cable box all have HDMI outs, so if I were to run hdmi cables from each peripheral and plug them into my receiver (which accepts HDMI), do I only have to run 1 HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV? I am assuming the A/V receiver can switch audio AND video feeds, however I am not sure if I need 3 hdmi's run to the TV behind my drywall as opposed to just 1 hdmi from the receiver to TV.

Yes - in theory you only need to run 1 HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV.
But run at least 1 extra. You may find you want to quickly hook something up to the TV without going through the receiver.
You must also buy wires with fire-proof insulation. This is called "CL2" or "CL3" rated.
For HDMI cables go to www.bluejeanscables.com . He sells really good HDMI cables that can run 50+ ft or more without a repeater and they all have CL2 or CL3 ratings.
Also:
* Run Cat5 or Cat6 cable to behind your rack. Many devices want internet these days and while wireless is possible - a hard cable has much higher bandwidth.
* Run telephone to behind your rack. Many Cable/Sat box's want telephone connection to let you order pay-per-view.
* Get the in-wall rated, 12 ga oxygen free speaker wire from speaker building sites like: www.partsexpress.com. Buy a spool and use it everywhere.
* Pull enough speaker wire to create un-broken runs from your amp to the speakers.
* Run speaker wire through electrical outlet box's. Do NOT run interconnects through the same box's. Label the speaker wires with a simple A, B, C... label each foot from both ends.
* Buy blank wall plates and drill holes for the speaker wires to run through for a custom look. $1 per plate is a lot cheaper that $60 for the Decora wall plates with binding posts and you can always add these plates later.
* Zig-zag the speaker wire between studs using insulated staples pounded LIGHTLY in. Years from now you may need some slack so you tug to pop the first staple and give you a few more inches. Tug again for more.
* Label, Label, LABEL: You can buy wire labels from radio shack that have a place for writing and clear tape that wraps around to protect the writing. Trust me - a few years from now simple hash-marks even from a permanent marker will fade unless you wrap with tape.
* Go visit HomeTheaterFourm and AVS fourm. These sites have postings by people who have build dedicated HT rooms. Their stories will show you things you can do now for the future cheaply.
