Is it common to get an audio delay using HDMI?
This weekend I hooked up an "upcoverting" DVD player to my HDTV with an HDMI cable. Since the audio on my HDTV itself is terrible, I used a coax out to my DTS receiver directly from the DVD player.
I noticed the audio and visuals on my DVD's were ever-so-slightly out of sync. I assumed this was because the HDMI was a direct digital connection to my TV while the coax had to be run through my receiver and out to my speakers. Does that sound right?
I noticed my current standard DVD player has an option to combat this, which is to offer a delay in milliseconds, while the upconverting DVD player did not. Is this delay feature unique to my current player, or is it becoming more and more common on other players?
What concerns me is that one day I'll want to updgrade to HD-DVD or Blu-Ray one day, and it seems they're making it so that HDMI is standard. Do any of the current HD players offer this delay feature that anyone knows of?
Audio delay is becoming more and more common, however with the new next generation players it isn't available yet. Best bet is to make sure your receiver has the ability to process a delay. The next specification for HDMI (1.3) has a lip-sync fearure designed into it, Whether it gets implemented is a different subject though.
