Which guitar amp should I get?
I'm torn between a Marshall MG101 1x12 MG4 and a Blackstar HT-5 Combo
The Marshall is 100W solid state, effects, and has power to spare
The Blackstar is 5W solid state, no effects, but great tone
I'm looking at a small gigging amp really, but something I can practise with too.
Playing genres includes Metal, Progressive, Hard Rock, Blues, Soft Rock, Post Rock, Punk, Pop. A bit of everything really.
Any recommendations, tips etc would be great, or if you think there's a better amp out there for me?
Price range is about $US650 max
If you want a gigging amp, Id say get something with at least 50 watts. A combo is excellent to transport and practice with. Definitely look for something that has a great sound, but also something that is powerful enough for you to gig with since you mentioned that you want to do that. Most people don't mic their amps at gigs.
Personally, I only use the clean channel on my amp and run my effects through it. So Im not so concerned with how the distortion sound/tone is on the amp channel. I love my Marshall distortion, but it becomes to cumbersome hit 3 or 4 pedals everytime I want to go from a distortion sound, to distortion with lead boost, to clean with chorus.
I have 3 Marshalls, and use them all the time in the rehearsal studios. They always sound great on clean and distortion. Line 6 makes a great amp, just make sure its more than the 30 watt amp for pedal compatability reasons. The Spider IV at 75watts or 150W stereo are both great deals. Some cheaper amps are Crate, Peavy, Fender... which you may find are suitable for you. I have 2 Crates, 1 Fender half stack and 1 Peavy, all are decent. I've always found that I can get a good tone with my guitar, pedals, amp settings and some savvy playing. And I am a metal player also.
Oh, I suggest getting an amp with reverb on board. It beats buying the reverb pedal, and adds a nice touch to your sound. I also play all Solid State amps.
